Navratri 2023: ‘May Goddess Durga bless everyone’, PM Modi extends Maha Ashtami wishes

People across the country are celebrating Durga Ashtami today, 22nd August is the eighth day of Navratri. Aarti was performed early in the morning. People gathered at Jhadewalan temple in Delhi and worshiped Goddess Durga.

On this occasion, the Chief Minister of Bihar visited the temple of Shitala Mata on ‘Maha Ashtami’ or ‘Durga Ashtami’.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter), “A very happy Durga Puja to my family members across the country. May Maa Durga bless everyone with good health and a happy life.”

While wishing Durga Ashtami to the people across the country, Home Minister Amit Shah said, “Heartiest wishes to all the countrymen on the holy festival of Durga Ashtami. Hail mother Goddess!

You will be a little surprised to know that today, according to Hindu mythology, Maha Ashtami is the day when Goddess Durga defeated the demon Mahishasura who terrorized the gods and humans, and the gods were not able to conquer him.

Therefore, he turned to Goddess Durga for help and she fought Mahishasura for nine days and nights. Finally, on the tenth day, Goddess Durga defeated the demon and people celebrated the victory of good over evil.

All these things are done on this day during the fast by Hindu people. Many devotees also keep fast on Durga Ashtami, pray and seek blessings. Hindus across the country decorate their homes with flowers and lights. Hindus also perform Kanya Puja on Durga Ashtami. Kanjakiya or Kanya Puja is performed on young girls who have not yet reached puberty.

And then after that those Kanjas are considered to be the purest form of the Goddess. Devotees invite nine young girls to their home and worship them.
